Hand Lettering Workshop

with Annie Mertlich, Artist & Founder of Wildfield Paper Co.

Annie Mertlich, the talented watercolor and lettering artist behind Wildfield Paper Co., will teach you how to hand letter your favorite quote with a variety of techniques and styles for a unique finished piece! She will walk through her lettering workflow using Procreate on her iPad, as well as an alternate process using pen and paper (for those who do not have iPads or prefer this approach).

Graph paper, pencils and pens will be provided. Bring your iPad with Procreate if you have it!

Taking Charge of Your Career Like a Boss (Q&A)

with Nicole Lapin, Bestselling Author, News Anchor & Businesswoman, moderated by Mariam Naficy, Minted Founder and CEO

Drawing from her book, Boss Bitch, New York Times bestselling author and money expert Nicole Lapin shares raw stories from her own career and experiences starting businesses—the good, the bad, and the ugly—to show what it means to be a "boss" in practical steps. You don’t need dozens or hundreds of employees to be a boss — you just need to be confident, savvy, and ready to get out there and make your success happen. Mariam will moderate this session in a Q&A format.

Word Art: The Script Series with Sumi Brush Writing (Workshop)

with Deborah Velasquez, Artist-designer & Author

Paint words and discover the beauty of your own handwriting using a Sumi brush. Express yourself in line, and strokes (your expressive flow). Learn the personal and individual touches each hand has as it moves ink on paper. You will be guided through creative painting exercises using gouache, ink and as Sumi brush. I will share some of my Word Art© techniques and will introduce you to Asemic handwriting exercises.

Bring your favorite words, song titles or poems to paint if you wish. Other materials will be provided.

Meet other Camp Minted Attendees and create together during special Blockprinting workshop! Every participant will get the chance to contribute to a larger communal piece, as well as make their own wall art.

Linoleum blocks, paints and canvas will be provided. This activity is limited to 10 artists and will be offered 6 times during breaks between sessions.

Introduction to Art & Design in Procreate (Workshop)

with Alicia Schultz, Artist & Designer at Vine & Thistle

Procreate is a powerful tool for creating art digitally. In this workshop, Alicia Schultz will take you through the tools available in Procreate, share helpful features, and show you how to set up your canvases for creating Minted cards and art digitally. She will share her process for creating the art and stationery she submits for Minted challenges. She will also share some of her favorite shortcuts and tips for using Procreate.

We highly encourage bringing an iPad Pro with Procreate App installed and Apple Pencil (or other iPad Pro compatible stylus).

How to Produce Creative Process Videos for Social Media (Workshop)

with Laura Bolter, Lettering Artist

Video is a powerful strategy for growing engagement on your social media accounts. In this session, Laura Bolter will share tips that have helped her attract nearly 10,000 Instagram fans. She will demonstrate how to create process videos, share the tools that she uses, and teach you the basics of using Adobe Premier to edit your video for social.

Handouts will be provided. This is a repeat of Laura’s popular session at Camp Minted 2018.

Introduction to Watercolor: Florals or Leaves (Workshop)

with Priscilla Lee, Watercolor Artist

If you are brand new to watercolor and want to learn more about this beautiful art medium, this is a perfect, beginner-friendly course that will cover everything you need to know to get you started. We will go over the essential elements of watercolor, including what supplies achieve optimal results, basic brush strokes and watercolor techniques, and how to approach painting different florals and leaves.

Printmaking Workshop for Stationery

with Katharine Watson, Artist & Printmaker

Katharine Watson will be teaching an intro to block printing class specifically tailored for stationery design. Come learn to carve your own block, and leave with a hand-printed greeting card or invitation design. All levels welcome! This will be an introductory class, intended to give you some basic printmaking skills, tips for setting up your own printing station at home, and ideas to develop stationery designs for printmaking.

All materials will be provided. This is an extended session and will run until 5:45pm. Limited to 35 artists.

Minted gives an exclusive, behind-the-scenes peek into our new and fast-growing Greeting Cards business. In this session, the Minted team will share our vision for reinventing the $7 billion greeting cards industry, lessons learned from our retail partners, and customer insights that will help you design and write copy for greeting cards that sell.

This session will be similar in format to our Camp Minted 2018 "Minted Breaks it Down" session, but with updated content based on what's new in the business.

Explore the world of painted paper collage with mixed media artist Jennifer Daily. This workshop will include a demonstration of techniques for creating painted papers for use in your own art and design work. Then we will have plenty of time to get our hands dirty and make a collage or two using methods specifically developed to make collaging simple and successful.

You Don't Suck at Procreate, Your Brushes Do: Customizing and Creating Procreate Brushes From Scratch (Workshop)

with Julie Green, Letterer, Font Designer & Graphic Artist

Learning to create brushes from scratch is game-changing for Procreate users, helping them realize their creative vision by mimicking real-world artists’ implements, giving them more precise control over their work, and bringing depth to their final pieces. In this workshop, you’ll learn how Procreate brushes work, how to customize existing brushes, and how to create your own from scratch. The focus will be on texture, sketching, line-art, and lettering brushes. Leave the workshop with brand new Procreate brushes!

Artists should bring an iPad Pro with the most recent version of the Procreate app installed and an Apple Pencil. A few brush files will be provided ahead of the workshop along with instructions to download and install them. Please do this prior to the workshop.

How to Style and Photograph Your Products - Without Expensive Equipment (Workshop)

Learn how to use your phone and other accessible tools to style, photograph, and edit images that reflect your style so you can share your process and products with the world.

This is a repeat of Megan’s popular session at Camp Minted 2018. She will use new examples this year, so feel free to join again or for the first time!

Using Adobe Textile Designer to Design Prints and Repeating Patterns in Photoshop (Presentation + Q&A)

with Mike Scrutton, Director of Print Technology and Strategy at Adobe

Creating repeating prints and patterns in Photoshop can be troublesome. In this session, Mike will introduce Adobe’s new plugin for Photoshop, Adobe Textile Designer and show how this versatile tool can be used for a myriad of applications whether you start your designs with sketches, paintings or digitally created work. Come and learn how to reduce many hours of work to a handful of clicks.

Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop is assumed. If you bring a laptop with Adobe Photoshop CC installed, you’ll be able to follow along. Adobe Textile Designer is available at adobe.com/go/textiledesigner.

Keynote will take place from 1:15 - 2:15pm, followed by a book signing with Adam from 02:15 - 02:45pm.

Creative Photography Workshop for Intermediate Photographers

with Amy Carroll, Photographer

Have you been wanting to amp up your photography? Amy will be helping you to hone your skills and develop a signature style with your photography, utilizing available light to give your images a signature look. We will practice taking portraits and/or self-portraits using these techniques, followed by a demonstration of how editing can enhance and transform your work.

This session is geared towards artists with some experience using a DSLR camera. Artists are encouraged to bring their DSLR camera to this class.

Bringing Traditional Drawing and Painting into Digital Workflow (Workshop) - Opportunity 1 of 2

Learn how to bring traditional pen and ink drawings, textures and elements into the digital realm for use in Minted submissions. Erin will review best practices for creating artwork and scanning for digital output, how to easily separate traditional linework for recoloring in Photoshop, and how to utilize clipping masks, layering and textures to give their illustrations a multi-dimensional feel within the digital realm. This class will take you from sketchbook to final submission!

Basic knowledge of Photoshop is assumed. Artists are encouraged but not required to bring a laptop with Photoshop and a scanned drawing to follow along. There will also be a handout with instructions to follow at home. This is a repeat of Erin’s popular session at Camp Minted 2018.

Running your own creative business can be a daunting undertaking. Our three panelists demonstrate that there’s no one path to being a successful artist or designer. Join Meg, Erika, and Carrie as they share practical advice for developing your portfolio and signature style, evaluating various revenue streams (e.g., wholesale, online, licensing, physical retail), and practical tools to manage your time and business. 

This panel will end with a short Q&A.

Intro to Typography and Fonts for Stationery Design: Tracking, Font Pairing, Glyphs, and more! (Workshop)

with Amy Ehmann, Artist & Founder of Design Lotus and Jackie Mangiolino, Designer & Owner of Sincerely, Jackie

Amy and Jackie, two successful, self-taught designers who focus heavily on typography, will be teaching you the fundamentals of typography in stationery design. They’ll cover the technical lingo (tracking, leading, and kerning), how to use glyphs, classic font pairings, where to find free fonts as well as purchasing fonts, and simple tips they’ve learned through their 10+ years of designing with fonts. The course includes hands-on time for attendees to work on their own designs and receive feedback from Amy and Jackie.

Basic knowledge of Illustrator required. Bring a design in Illustrator that includes typography to work on during the session. If you do not have access to Illustrator, bring a printout of a design to receive feedback on. While this is a beginners course, if you’re a more experienced designer or artist looking for ways to enhance your typography, you’ll be able to pick up plenty of tips and refreshers.

Millennials and Gen Z: Your Customers of Today and Tomorrow (Presentation + Q&A)

Millennials are now in their 20s and 30s and have become a huge force in retail and culture. The oldest Gen Z’ers are now graduating college, with weddings and first homes just around the corner. Learn what makes these younger generations tick - their beliefs, cultural influences, shopping behaviors, demographics, and more.

Reinvent. Rinse. Repeat. (Workshop)

with Jacob Loafman, Photographer

We all want to grow as artists, but how do we make sure that growth is constantly happening? A straight line is safe and comfortable, but growth is born from peaks and valleys. The valleys are challenges. The peaks are the result of going through the challenges. As a photographer, Jacob has created monthly challenges for himself to force growth. In this class, he will discuss inspiration, creative thinking, breaking down the scene, technical tips/tricks, and the steps he uses to grow as an artist. If you’re tired of being on a straight line with your work, then get ready for some peaks and valleys in this class.

This workshop will focus on photography. No materials required.
